CommissionerStudentRossana Rosado is the first Latina and only the third woman to lead the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) since its creation in 1972. During her 2 ½ year tenure, DCJS has evolved its focus on public safety to include community justice. The agency’s current budget is the largest in its history.
A $500 million increase secured by Governor Kathy Hochul in partnership with the State Legislature has allowed DCJS to provide record-level funding to its partners in law enforcement, community corrections and alternatives to incarceration. This investment also allowed DCJS to increase support for community-based and grassroots organizations working to address the causes and consequences of crime and criminal justice practices in traditionally underserved neighborhoods. Rosado has facilitated challenging conversations, brought diverse stakeholders to the table, and broadened the scope of the agency’s work. DCJS remains focused not only on improving public safety and further advancing the fairness of the criminal justice system, but building, creating, and healing communities so all New Yorkers have opportunities to thrive. |
